In 2018, I got my first tattoo at the age of 44. I traveled to an artist in another state to get the work done by an artist that I admired and at the same time, I began a journey into tattooing.
In 20015 I started regularly making illustrations for StrangeMatter, a Richmond music venue that was host to many of my favorite musical experiences, both as a musician and a spectator. In the beginning, these illustrations were an attempt to foster a relationship to music through the use of my wit and drawing talents, but over time, my research, skill and imagery led to a new interest for me: tattooing.
As my first forays into the tattooing community locally progressed, I had productive, helpful conversations with several Richmond tattoo artists, each encouraging and inspirational in different ways. So with that encouragement, I sought to do some real learning and training.
By working with a capable mentor, I've achieved a portfolio and licensure. I have more to do, and am excited by where this journey has taken me so far. I've had amazing experiences with my clients, and can't wait to see what the future holds for me in this area.
I've given myself some time to devote to this growth, and left time for myself to keep making art off-skin, too. I'll be debuting Octorbach (my newest October drawing challenge collection), a new issue of Nekhbet (#7!), and some other illustration work at NOICE on February 5th. So look forward to that!
Thank you to everyone who's supported my recent shifts, in particular, Anthony, Amber, Jacob, Ms. Shirley, and, of course, Debbie. A tremendous thank you to anyone who's offered their trust and skin along my journey.
